How do Fire Hydrants Work?

When you play outside with your friend on a nice night, you suddenly hear a loud horn and the sound of a siren screaming. Oh no! There, in the distance, you see thick smoke from a nearby house. This caught fire and the fire truck responded to an emergency. You start thinking about how firefighters fight fire, and your mind starts asking where do they get all the water they need to put out the fire? Does the fire truck have a large tank that holds all the water?

Fire trucks have water tanks, but they can't have enough water to fight fire effectively. So where did the water come from? Most of the water comes from the right source in your own environment. They are around you, and you may rarely notice it or give them second thoughts. What do you mean? Fire hydrant of course!

Sometimes called fire plugs, hydrants are short, fat metal devices that you often see along the side of the road near the edge of the road. They can vary in size and appearance, but are usually cylindrical with various valves and connection points.

Usually painted colors, such as bright red or yellow, help firefighters find it easily in the event of an emergency. In some areas, local laws require that fire hydrants be painted in certain colors depending on how much water they can supply at certain pressures. This helps firefighters determine which fire hydrant is best to be used for certain situations.

Regarded as an active fire protection tool, fire hydrants allow firefighters to access local water supplies quickly. A fire truck will usually carry enough water to allow firefighters to start fighting fire while hoses are connected to the nearest fire hydrant.

How to Operate a Fire Hydrant

Fire hydrants must be operated properly, so that adequate fire protection can be provided consistently. Always use a hydrant wrench when operating it. The repeated use of a pipe wrench on a five-sided operation nut will remove the nut so that the hydrant wrench will no longer function. Make sure the seller of fire hydrant is reliable so that the product is of high quality.
After opening the highest port, slowly open the hydrant valve a few turns until the water reaches the open port. Flush any debris that might be on the hydrant barrel. If the water is clear, slowly open it completely. It is important to replace the trapped air from the barrel. Compressed air can cause problems. Remember that air is compressible, and water is not compressible.

Sometimes internal hydrant valves may not function properly due to debris or mechanical problems. If possible, attach the operating hand valve to the port where the water will flow. If the flow from the hydrant cannot be completely turned off by using the operating nut, use the hand valve to stop the flow, then close the control valve on the hydrant so that it completely turns off the hydrant so that repairs and / or replacement work can be done.

Very old hydrants cannot be operated by inexperienced personnel because the hydrant cannot sit properly when closed and may be allowed to walk. Also, inexperienced people can break the stem while forcing it in an effort to make the hydrant stop leaking. Therefore, the use of pipes must be as minimal as possible when operating an older hydrant.
